Feeling Ambitious

I’m not sure what has come over me, but I’ve begun working in paper again. Part of the illustration curriculum at RIT is dimensional illustration, which means illustrating in 3D. At the time, it was extremely hard for me to turn out any work that I didn’t want to shove under my bed for shame. I felt that it was that bad. I just couldn’t get the hang of it, and didn’t give it the time that it needed. For some reason, I decided to devote my time to it again. I feel must get this right. Finally. Also, it looks really cool and is impressive if you do it right. I’m constantly in awe when I see artist that create beautiful paper sculptures. It’s a really unique medium to work in.

Anyway. This is where I am so far:

This is sort of a template that I drew outlining the shapes that I think I should cut out. I think that I’m going to have to re-cut some of the pieces that I cut out, but it’s the best I’ve ever done thus far.

These are most of the pieces that I have cut out so far. I’m using old filing folders because the paper is more stiff, and it was pretty easy to accurately cut out the shapes. I’m using white scrap paper to create the fur on the lynx. I’m experimenting with different ways to cut out the fur. I want it to be as efficient as possible, while still looking like convincing fur. First I tried cutting out each individual piece of fur and it took me longer than I’m willing to admit to glue down each little sliver of paper. Now, I’m trying to cut the paper into strips, and layer larger pieces.

We’ll see how this goes, but I’m planning on posting in progress pics.

Cheers!
